Quick question. Does anyone know how much ethernet cable minds being trodden on? Will it be OK if I run it under the hall carpet?

In my experience, unless you run it along the skirting board, I wouldn't run it under the carpet at all. It holds many grudges after being trodden on and eventually dies.

Yep. And in the process of dying, it will go through a phase of almost working properly.

likewise, at the edge of rooms should be fine.

my other cable died after a single kitten nibble though, so obviously it's not that sturdy..

CAT cables are contagious,
be careful how you tread.
A cable that’s been trodden on
should be confined to bed.

I think you can get reinforcing stuff to go around the outside of the cable like spiral wrap. You can also get reinforced CAT cable. Both might be a bit bulky under the carpet though. I’m currently doing the same thing in our house and debating if I really want to lift up floorboards.
